I disagree with the official definition of burnout!

 According to the WHO the definition of Burnout goes as follows:
“Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

It is characterized by three dimensions:

  • feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
  • increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job;
  • reduced professional efficacy.

Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.”

I disagree with the second part. What is an occupational context? Does it require a salary?

Anyway in Germany they have clinics for burnt out parents. I thought that was interesting, as it clearly shows that burnout isn’t just work (paid work) related.

The reason why the WHO has stated burnout as an occupational phenomena is, that the doctors need to be able to give you a sick note. It has to be a thing.
